The Great Blue Wave martini beside a blue drink on the rocks, a cocktail shaker and a frosted vodka bottle

After 10 long years, the Hungry Hubbies blog is back. With a vengeance! The last time we mixed a drink in this space it was The Collusion, and we promised you a cherry on top just as soon as Mueller finished his damn job. We’re still waiting on that cherry.

This one starts out as a classic vodka sour, but the substitution of blue vodka (because obviously) and blue pea flower syrup (because victory is so very sweet) creates a fresh take on a drink for election night and the very happy morning after.

Election night on the dining table

A word about the science. Blue pea flower (you may know it as butterfly pea) is a natural pH indicator: on its own it blushes violet the moment lime juice hits it. But the blue vodka holds the line, and ours stayed blue all the way to the bottom of the glass. No swing states in this one.

The recipe

Ingredients

Blue Pea Flower Syrup

Directions

Make the syrup

  1. Bring the water and sugar to a simmer in a small saucepan, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat, add the blue pea flowers and steep for about 10 minutes, until it’s the color of a very good night.
  3. Strain into a clean jar, cool, and refrigerate. It keeps for about two weeks, which is longer than most campaign promises.

Make the Great Blue Wave

  1. If you’re serving it neat, chill a cocktail glass.
  2. Add the blue vodka, blue pea flower syrup and lime juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  3. Shake it like you’re knocking on doors the weekend before the election.
  4. Serve it neat: strain into the chilled cocktail glass, because that’s how we trounced the GOP.
  5. Or have it on the rocks: strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass, which is where we have Trump now.
  6. Garnish with a lime wheel, or with the smug satisfaction of someone who actually voted.

LOLOLOL! I'm definitely making this tonight and sharing it with the neighbors on both sides of the aisle.

And I love the first one with spray tan and hookers!
